On Friday, March 23, 2001, in the Opryland Hotel, Nashville, TN, Cornells Lake Source Cooling Transmission Pipeline (built by Barnard Construction Co., Inc., and designed/engineered by Gryphon International Engineering Services, Inc.)was named one of six winners chosen from a field of 60 projects.

The Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Awards were begun in 1992 by the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America. Named after the AGCs 1991 president, Marvin M. Black, who vigorously advocated Partnering - the formalized approach to putting the old-fashioned handshake back into construction. The awards are now presented annually to the construction projects that best epitomize the principles of Partnering.

The stated purpose of the award is to:

  • Identify excellence in partnering
  • Celebrate success
  • Honor stakeholders
  • Maintain the momentum of partnering
  • Perpetuate the process of partnering

The judging factors considered in selection of the award winers are:

  • Adherence to the principles of partnering
  • Teambuilding
  • Improved communications

  • Delivery of quality to the jobsite
