Special Recognition Award Department of Utilities and Energy Management at Cornell University This year the Department of Utilities and Energy Management at Cornell University has received an award of Special Recognition for its "Lake Source Cooling Project." The project represents an enormous investment leading to major reductions in energy use for the campus with little impact on nearby Lake Cayuga. Developed by the engineers in the department of Utilities and Energy Management, the team combined public feedback and education with the sustainable use of a local natural resource. Since the project's beginning, energy usage for air conditioning at Cornell has been reduced by 86%.

Subject: Ecological Society of America Award

Dear Mr. Adams,

I am pleased to notify you that the Ecological Society of America wishes to recognize the Department of Utilities and Energy Management at Cornell by presenting it with an Award of Special Recognition and Merit for the "Lake Source Cooling Project." The Corporate Award Committee of ESA has nominated the professional engineers in the Department for "their extraordinary vision and effort in proposing, and carrying through to realization, a major contribution to the wise sustainable use of a renewable natural resource," and the Governing Board of the ESA has enthusiastically approved this award.

The ESA will provide a plaque, recognizing the Department for this award, as well as announce the award at its annual meeting this summer in Tucson, Arizona, and in the Bulletin of the ESA. You or a representative are invited to attend the Award Ceremony at the annual meeting to receive the plaque. The Award Ceremony will be held on Thursday, August 8, from 4:00 - 5:00 pm in the Tucson Convention Center, Copper Ballroom.

When I called your office earlier today I learned that you are out of the office. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at the number below. You will be receiving a letter ofl notification of the award from the President of the ESA in the near future. It would also be helpful if you could let me know if you or a member of your Department will be attending the Award Ceremony. If not, you may feel free to ask someone else from Cornell who might be attending the ESA meeting, such as Nelson Hairston who nominated your Department for the award, to receive it for you.

Again, congratulations for receiving this prestigious recognition from the ESA.

Sincerely,

Rebecca Sharitz
