Energy Savings Tips on Campus

by Michael Boggs

WALK - for those that get around campus walk when you can.  Use the stairs in lieu of the elevator.  It is good exercise and it does save energy.

TURN IT OFF- ask yourself it it can be turned off:  Lights, air conditioning/heating equipment, coffee pots, appliances, fume hoods, your computer, and vehicles - please don't idle vehicles just because it is cold.

REPORT IT - If it is broken, can't be turned off, can't be turned down, or not how you would leave it at home - tell us and we'll try to get it fixed.  If your office is too cold because a closet has been converted to a server room - again tell us a we'll try to get it fixed. Are the lights on all the time because it isn't switched properly?

ENCOURAGE BEST PRACTICES - use and encourage duplex printing, if you can turn your office lights and air handlers off, turn your computer off, don't prop doors open, close fume hoods, don't use fume hoods for storage - ask for storage cabinets.  If you can safely do with less - let us work with you. If you see a better way to do something or can do the same or better with less - tell us, let us help you.

Be a STEWARD of your campus:  We are Cornell University - care about it, care about us.
