The Department of Utilities and Energy Management is part of the division of Facilities Services within the organization of Cornell University Finance and Administration (CUFA). This organization is a large and diverse unit providing a broad spectrum of operational support services for the university.

	Heating Steam is produced by the Central Heating Plant by burning a variety of fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas. See also Combined Heat and Power Project.			Coo ling Chilled water is produced by the Chilled Water Plants for air conditioning and laboratory cooling. See also Lake Source Cooling.
	Potable Water The Water Filtration Plant purifies water from a local creek which is then distributed for campus use. Renewable Energy Since its earliest days Cornell has had Hydroelectric power. Photovoltaics have been installed recently. Lake Source Cooling went on line in summer 2000.			Engineering, Planning and Energy Management Engineering and planning for all of the central energy plants, develops design and construction standards for campus construction, and pursues energy savings opportunities on campus. 	Electric Electricity is provided to central campus via a main substation with connections to the NYSEG 115kV transmission system and campus generators. Primary distribution throughout campus consists of underground cables and switchgear rated at 13.2kV and 2.4kV. Other There are other types of services that are considered utilities, including telephones, sewage treatment, and cable television. At Cornell, the telephone system is managed by CIT, and sewage treatment is provided by the intermunicipal waste water treatment plant. There is no centralized cable television service on campus.
